You don't need to be an interior designer to experiment with paint color in your home—you just need to follow along with Fresh Coat. We'll help you tackle all of your home's painting projects, from choosing the ultimate color palette to perfecting your method. You'll be prepped, primed, and ready to roll (literally) in no time.

Your window shutters are teeming with aesthetic opportunity—you just need the right paint color. "Shutters are a really easy way to refresh the look of your exterior if you're not ready to paint your whole home," explains Sue Wadden, the Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams. "Shutters are meant to act as accents to the rest of the exterior, and you can use them to add a modern burst of personality with a fun color, or keep things classic with a color to match the architectural style of your home."

However, with the wide assortment of paint colors on the market, separating the stellar shutter hues from the so-so can be tricky. "I strongly recommend homeowners invest in a high-quality paint," Wadden says. "Especially on your exterior, where the paint will be exposed to the sun, rain, and other elements, you want to use a paint that's going to last a long time. High-quality paints resist fading in the sun and maintain their look longer—meaning all your hard work will last." Curious about which shutter paint shades color experts swear by? We asked Wadden and a few other paint professionals for their picks, and these were their recommendations.

Navy

If you're searching for a neutral shade of paint for your shutters that still makes a statement, Behr Paint's Vice President of Color and Creative Services, Erika Woelfel, says to look no further than navy. "I love incorporating rich, deep colors for home accents and Very Navy M500-7 stands the test of time," she says. "It is a popular bold blue that's complements any neutral exterior."

Gray

When it comes to shutter paint colors, Annie Sloan, the creator of Chalk Paint, says you can't go wrong with a versatile shade of gray. "Chateau Grey is a gorgeous, nuanced neutral green with depth and character inspired by the colors used by traditional French chateau painters," she says. "It's a very soft, light reflective hue that will work in virtually any scheme."

Smoky Green

A fresh coat of dark green paint can have a big impact on your home's exterior. "If you have a brick façade, a smoky hue, such as Green Smoke, provides a pleasant contrast and creates a lovely period feel," says Patrick O'Donnell, the International Brand Ambassador at Farrow & Ball. If you're looking for a shade of paint that will make your shutters stand out, Woelfel suggests a deep, earthy green like Black Evergreen by Behr. "This shade is sure to pop on your home's exterior," she says.

Black

According to our experts, painting your window shutters black is a tried-and-true way to elevate a white exterior. "If you have a white house, use Tricorn Black SW 6258 to create a classic look," Wadden says. Not only is black-and-white a failsafe color combo, Sloan says it will allow the architectural elements of your home's exterior to shine. "A heavily pigmented, rich dark black like Athenian Black will draw attention to the architecture of the shutters, highlighting the lines and the design," she explains.

Pale Blue

You can always count on an eye-catching shade of light blue shutter paint. "Not too strong and not too soft, Harbor Haze 2136-60 supplies a wink of color that still feels casual," says Hannah Yeo, the Color Marketing and Development Manager at Benjamin Moore. "Pair it with a red front door, or bring colorful flowers to the forefront—you'll soon learn that this charming blue is surprisingly versatile, and never looks out of place."
