Short on Closet Space? Stock Up on These Storage Must-Haves

Closets are important features in every home; they give you a designated space to store those unsightly products that you don't want out in the open. Plus, they're critical when it comes to organizing your clothes, coats, and linens. Unfortunately, not every home comes with ample closet space—but that doesn't mean that you can't make what you have work for you. With the right storage methods and products, you can maximize even the smallest of cabinets.

It all comes down to clearing clutter first, then adding space where you can. When you don't have enough closets, you need to be strategic about editing down to the essentials and purchasing functional furniture, says Ashley Murphy, the co-founder of NEAT Method. "A great first step is implementing a dresser large enough to hold folded items," she says. "Then consider purchasing a really pretty clothing rack and matching hangers." For linen and utility needs, consider adding an armoire in your hallway.

And then make sure the space you do have is functioning as best it can. "We frequently find that people don't maximize the vertical space in their closets," explains Marissa Hagmeyer, the other founder of NEAT Method. "Try double hanging rod space in clothing closets or implementing stackable shoe racks." If that doesn't meet your needs, consider adding a cubby system. "They can easily be added to closets; then sort items into labeled bins," she says. And don't forget the wasted space above your top shelf. "Many closets also have enough height to implement another shelf at the top." Whether you're lacking a closet, or the minimal space you do have isn't cutting it, the products ahead can help.
