A Visual Guide to All the Different Types of Poodle Mixes, Also Called Doodle Dogs

There are currently over 40 different types of Poodle mixes—or doodles, as they're lovingly called. These dogs are born from Poodles with other purebreds like pugs, Labradors, or Cocker Spaniels. Since the 1980s, doodle dogs have increased in their popularity—and it's not a wonder why. "Doodles are great pups!" says Colleen Demling, dog behaviorist at Dogtopia. "They shed less and have less dander than the breed that the poodle is crossed with."

Because poodles come in three standard sizes, there is a wide range of dog sizes for people to adopt—everything from mini Goldendoodles to the standard Cockapoo and the larger, gentle-giant Newfypoo. These breeds are often low- to non-shedding, and are consider to be a safe bet for most people with allergies.

Their personalities make them ideal companions for many people, too. "Doodles are also versatile family pets and can often do everything from city life to country life, hiking to relaxing at home," says Demling. "And since Poodles are affectionate, kid- and dog-friendly, social and charismatic, the doodles tend to be the same!" Demling recommends that families look at the traits of the breed that is crossed with the Poodle. For example, Bernedoodle dogs tend to be more stubborn but they have lower energy than a Goldendoodle.

Another thing that people should look at is the generation of the doodle. Generation refers to how far removed from a purebred pairing—like a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador as parents. "The puppy will likely have strong personality traits of both individual breeds," Demling explains. "However, if a pup is an F2 [that is, both parents were doodles] or F3 (grandparents were doodles), then the individual breed traits are less defined or obvious."
